"Don’t be a Hero: Why Your Team Needs a Coach, Not a Savior"
As leaders, it’s tempting to swoop in during times of crisis, to provide solutions, make decisions, and rescue the team from challenges. While it may be “easier” to assume this role, it often undermines the team's ability to think critically and solve problems independently.
The truth is, being a leader isn’t about always having the right answers—it’s about empowering others to find those answers themselves, which requires a great deal of humility. The real job entails coaching, not rescuing. One of the keys to this is asking powerful questions like “What’s the real challenge here?”, “What have you tried?” or “What would you do if there were no constraints?” These questions help your team break through their own barriers, think outside the box, and take ownership of solving the problem. It’s about creating space for them to step up, rather than you stepping in.
A coaching mindset also builds confidence. When you ask, “What would you do if you couldn’t fail?” you open up new possibilities. Suddenly, the problem becomes an opportunity, and your team feels empowered to find creative solutions. This isn’t just problem-solving—it’s creating a culture where people feel trusted to act and make decisions without always relying on you.
But here’s the kicker: You can’t be afraid to let go. Leaders who always “rescue” their teams are holding them back. By stepping back and giving your team the autonomy to solve problems, you make them more resourceful and resilient. Your role isn’t to fix things—it’s to offer guidance when necessary, but ultimately, allow your team to rise to the challenge.
When you adopt this coaching mindset, you foster psychological safety—where people can take risks, share ideas, and make mistakes without fearing judgment. The result? A more innovative, confident, and capable team.
So, stop rescuing. Coach. The more you coach and empower, the more your team will elevate—and so will you.
